the derwent reservoir | local spots
The Derwent Reservoir is probably the most popular reservoir in the local area and it seems that everyone under the sun has visited, sometimes just for the infamous little cafe the Boat Shack. Located in the North Pennines AONB, it's actually a pretty big body of water that I think you can walk right around.
It's only about a twenty minute drive from my house and even though Google Maps had my life and kept taking me around in circles across the A68, it's actually really quite easy to get to.
I didn't spend too long here because I had Misty (the smallest and most demanding of my three dogs) with me and she'd had enough by the time we got halfway around the reservoir, but I plan to come back with Charlie (the pup) and have a good old explore.
It's a really pretty little pathway that leads you from the car park up to the walled dam part of the reservoir, with lots of greenery and flowers and even on a moody day makes for some really pretty photos. Next time I visit, I'm going to bring some snacks and a blanket and have a little picnic.
Another place ticked off of my local spots list! I'm definitely starting to make the most of my days off from work by exploring a little until I build up my confidence driving and I can make the drive up to Northumberland National Park.
